EXPERIENCE 1
During the summer of 2024, I volunteered at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where I greeted and guided patients’ families and offered emotional support during difficult times. This experience reshaped my understanding of healthcare—it’s not just about medical procedures but also about compassion, empathy, and human connection. I learned that simply being present for someone can be incredibly meaningful. While I initially felt unsure about how to comfort distressed families due to my age and lack of experience, I gradually developed emotional intelligence and confidence through continued exposure and learning. This experience aligned with the UHP focus areas of Impact and Inclusion. Small acts of kindness—like a smile, a conversation, or a walk to a room—left a lasting impression on those I helped. I also engaged with people from diverse backgrounds and used my Spanish skills and nonverbal communication to ensure everyone felt welcomed and respected.Volunteering reinforced my desire to pursue medicine with both technical skill and compassionate care. It shaped my approach as a current patient care technician and pharmacy technician and solidified my goal of becoming a well-rounded, empathetic doctor who also inspires and mentors others in healthcare.

One favorite thing about the volunteering experience is that I have made so many friends, people who I trust and constantly share stories and seek advice. No matter where I go or what I do, I believe the most important thing anyone can achieve from an experience is the connection, the friendship that they have cultivated. For me, it's a precious gift that this experience has given me.
