About me

Khanh Phan is a second-year student at the University of Cincinnati, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He is also on a Pre-Med track with the desire to pursue a future career in healthcare. Khanh is usually described by his peers and mentors to be a dynamic, diverse, and dedicated person. Which, explains his choice of choosing majors. Khanh aims to use his knowledge as an engineer to solve problems and issues that the healthcare system is encountering. He believes "the best way to execute this is to study abroad and learn from the global perspective about a problem and then integrate, modify, and apply it to our system to better strengthen it". This mindset motivates him to apply to the University Honors Program, along with his diverse background, he believes that it would make me a good global citizen.

My Story

I was born in Vietnam into a family of doctors who held strong traditional values. From a young age, it felt as though my life had already been planned out for me, filled with various activities I wasn't sure I truly wanted to pursue. This environment unintentionally led me to become overly dependent and left me struggling with self-identity. In Vietnam, self-exploration was challenging because the educational system heavily emphasized academic competition, leaving little room for personal growth or creativity. The constant pressure to outperform others made teamwork rare and personal development difficult.

Moving to the United States was a life-changing experience for me, allowing me to embrace my culture and connect with others who share my background. These connections helped me grow by fostering a sense of belonging and pride in my heritage, which has become a vital part of my identity. I met incredible people, including my cousin, who have supported me in discovering who I am and who I want to become. Here, I found the freedom to listen to music I enjoy, build friendships with people I genuinely connect with, and explore my academic interests. Reconnecting with my culture has enriched these friendships and furthered my personal development, giving me a deeper appreciation for my heritage and identity. I noticed how students in the U.S. often collaborate and support each other, a stark contrast to the competitive environment I experienced in Vietnam. This sense of community inspired me to recognize my passion for helping others. Seeing people heal, succeed, and grow because of my support brings me true happiness. Helping my friends study has been a meaningful way to cultivate this passion. Guiding them through challenging subjects and witnessing their progress reinforced my belief in the power of support and collaboration, further solidifying my dedication to helping others succeed. My love for science and health, combined with my desire to improve systems, has led me to pursue a career in healthcare and study engineering. I aspire to help individuals improve their well-being and contribute to advancing the healthcare system for the betterment of society.

I believe that UC as well as the UHP would help me achieve that goal.
